Primary Care Trust Case Study

Langbank Medical Centre

Langbank Medical Centre (MC) occupies a site on Broad Lane Norris Green close to a local shopping parade. There is a newly developed Chemist adjacent to the practice.

Langbank MC is a former domestic dwelling converted to a General Practice Medical Centre, providing primary care health services to the local community. Delivering a wide range of health clinics such as maternity to 4,600 patients. The Practice has three General Practitioners, one practice nurse and one Health Care Support worker. The practice employs three full-time, and 13 part-time members of staff.

Mary Creer, Practice Manager at Langbank MC first approached Health@Work in February 2002 following the distribution of Health@Work’s (formally Liverpool Occupational Health Partnership) Health & Safety Manual for General Practice. The Health & Safety manual was distributed to every GP Practice in Liverpool (130 manuals distributed in total).  A thorough risk assessment of the Practice was undertaken on 14th February 2002. This enabled the practice and Health@Work to formulate a long-term action plan for the development of a safety management system which fitted into the complex working timetable of the practice.

There then followed a number of further assessments providing a more detailed assessment of pertinent areas of work, including:

  • Health & Safety Audit: 14th January 2002
  • Disability Access Audit: 14th January 2002
  • Health & Safety Audit Review: 16th January 2004
  • Disability Access Audit Review: 16th January 2004
  • Health & Safety Audit review: 12th July 2005
  • Fire Risk Assessment: 14th July 2006
  • Display Screen Equipment Assessment:, 13th July 2006

As part of the safety management system, a wide range of training courses were delivered both to GPs and practice staff, including:

  • Manual handling
  • Display screen equipment
  • Risk assessments
  • Emergency First aid
  • Smoke-free awareness
  • Infection control awareness
  • Personal safety awareness
  • Basic Health & Safety
  • Fire Safety Awareness
  • Annual CPR re-certification

Future awareness sessions include:

  • Absence management for Practice managers
  • Alcohol awareness for all staff

Health@Work continues to work with the GPs, Practice Manager and staff at Langbank MC to improve safety and health within the practice, thus enabling the practice to deliver the Primary Health Care programme to the local community.
